Wes Kuran Award: Call for Applications

The Wes Kuran Scholarship – for a deserving university athlete – will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Ottawa Rowing Club on February 19, 2019.

The Scholarship was established to honour Wes Kuran in recognition of his service to the Ottawa Rowing Club as President (1997-2006) and for his long service to the club and rowing in Canada since the 1970s.

The award and cash prize of $500 will be awarded to support the studies of a university club member who has demonstrated leadership in volunteerism and also rowing success.

If you feel that you, or someone you know is deserving of this award, please follow the application guidelines below:

To be eligible for the Wes Kuran Scholarship, the following must be demonstrated:

The athlete must have rowed in a competitive program at the ORC in 2018, including being registered in a competitive membership through the summer;
The athlete intends to return to row at the ORC in 2019;
The athlete demonstrated leadership or volunteerism in rowing or other community activities during 2018. A description of activities and a letter of reference, which includes contact coordinates of the reference, must accompany the application.
The athlete has achieved success on the water during 2018 either through results at a major regatta such CSSRA, Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, Head of the Charles or the (Canadian) National Championship Regatta – or through a significant rowing improvement. Success must be supported with a letter from the coach.
The athlete is registered as a full-time university student in the 2018-19 academic year. Supporting documentation must be provided with the application.

The application should include:

A brief description (no more than 500 words) on how the criteria is met and why the award is merited.
Supporting letters from references and coaches as detailed above.
Contact information for the scholarship applicant including phone number and email address.
