Glebe Collegiate Tops The Medal Podium at CSSRA Championships

Jun 3, 2018

St. Catharines (ON) – The Glebe Collegiate rowing team arrived at the biggest regatta of the spring high school rowing season – the 73rd annual Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Regatta (June 1-3) – determined to move into the finals and leave champions.  They’ve been successful in their mission, beating out high school crews from across Canada to make finals and leave with a gold medal.
Following months of indoor winter training and with just four weeks of the spring to train on water at the Ottawa Rowing Club, Glebe crews finished at the spring high school championships in St. Catharines with a gold medal in the women’s junior double (Rachel Weber and Mackenzie Mihorean) in a time of 8:31.72, along with a 3rd in the women’s senior 59kg quad, a 4th in the women’s senior double, a 5th in the women’s junior coxed four and a 6th in the men’s senior 66kg quad.
Glebe rowing team and ORC junior lead coach, Glenn Hay, had this to say about the weekend full of racing, ‘every spring we’re never quite sure how our crews will do compared to all of the other schools at CSSRAs. We have the shortest spring rowing season compared to our competitors. The athletes performed incredibly well and we, as coaches, are so pleased. It’s been an excellent spring and we couldn’t be prouder of what our crews accomplished this weekend’.
Glebe Collegiate teacher and rowing coach, Brett Miller, was also awarded the CSSRA Outstanding Contribution Award in recognition of his volunteer contributions to rowing and the Glebe program.  Brett has been a longtime ORC rower and volunteer who lends support to the Glebe rowing program each year.
Many of these Glebe crews will be back training and preparing for the summer rowing season at the ORC, which will include competing at the biggest summer regattas – RowOntario Championships in July and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August.
