A highlight of the ORC’s AGM on February 28th was the presentation of the Wes Kuran Scholarship for 2016. The Wes Kuran Scholarship – for a deserving university athlete – was established to honour Wes Kuran in recognition of his service to the Ottawa Rowing Club as President (1997-2006) and for his long service to the club and rowing in Canada since the 1970s.
The award and cash prize of $500 is awarded to support the studies of a university club member who has demonstrated leadership in volunteerism and also rowing success.
The Wes Kuran Scholarship winner for 2016 is Lucy Ryan. Lucy’s rowing career began at the ORC in late summer 2015, following a novice season with Carleton University’s rowing team. In addition to rowing early mornings and late evenings since discovering the sport, Lucy has volunteered her time as a coach with the ORC’s Junior Development and learn to row program, and as a volunteer during the ORC’s Tulip Stake Race and at the National Capital High School Regatta. Congratulations, Lucy!
