Competitive rowing

The Ottawa Rowing Club has one of the most successful competitive programs in the country.  The ORC finished in top spot with 9 wins at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in 2015 and many of Canada’s national team rowers have come out of the ORC boathouse.

Competitive rowers are those who train to compete in sprint and head races and commit to the training program, workout sessions and regattas. Crews and regatta entries will be determined by the coach(es) based on on-the-water performance, and erg test scores.

Competitive rowing practice times are confirmed by the coach(es), but are generally scheduled twice daily Monday through Friday and on Saturday morning, April through November.

U23 and Senior rowers

It is anticipated that on-water practices will begin at 5:00 am in April and will be at the discretion of the Coach. There will be some flexibility for training during the university exam period. All competitive athletes should expect to be training full time by May 3rd. Athletes registering for the competitive program who are attending university in the U.S. should send an e-mail to the appropriate program coach with their expected return date.

Previous experience required:

competitive, high school, university, junior development or recreational rowing required. Winter training is recommended.

Age Categories: Junior and Senior

Competitive Program Fees

ORC program fees include membership fees for Row Ontario and Rowing Canada and include HST.  Membership fees do not include expenses related to regatta competition.  Such expenses can include regatta entry fees, transportation, accommodation, trailering fees and transaction fees. Rowers must also purchase and compete in an ORC uniform.

  • Junior rowers: Spring high school rowers can “upgrade” their registration to:
  • Summer Membership: June 15 to August 15
  • Summer and Fall Membership: June 15 to November 15
  • Fall Membership: August 15 to November 15

Regatta Costs

The ORC does its best to advise members of exact regatta fees as far in advance of each regatta as possible.  Generally this is one to two weeks prior to a regatta.  Regatta fees are due and must be paid for prior to boat loading.

The following is an estimate of regatta fees per club regatta on the ORC calendar of events.

These fees are estimates only and can be at the higher or lower end for any given athlete depending on the number of entries an athlete may have, the requirement for accommodation and transportation via the club and variable expenses from time to time, such as the cost of gas for trailering boats to and from a regatta and the currency exchange rate between Canada and the US.

All program fees include HST, credit card processing fees, Rowing Canada and RowOntario association fees.  Program fees do not include expenses associated with regatta participation, such as entry fees, travel and trailering fees.  Regatta expenses are in addition to the program fee.
