COVID-19 and the ORC: Update 3

The Ottawa Rowing Club (ORC) is continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation and is adhering to the recommendations that Ottawa Public Health, Provincial, and Federal Governments have made with respect to helping prevent the spread of the virus. Consequently, the ORC will be officially closed for a minimum of 14 days with an earliest possible return date of April 6th. Please note, that the closure of the Club extends to all non-rowing specific activities including team training, dock installation, and boathouse rentals.

Additionally, ORC program registration has been temporarily suspended via the Club’s webpage. Program registration will remain on hold until we can confidently determine a date by which we can be open safely and responsibly and offer programming to our members.

A number of events have been temporarily removed from the ORC’s online calendar including:

        - Member Information Meeting (April 8th)

        - Dock Installation (April 25th)

        - Tulip Regatta (May 2nd)

        - ORC Ergatta (May 9th)

Once the Club has some more insight as to the potential progression of the season, we will determine alternate event dates where possible.

Lastly, in order to support all of our members training at home, the Ottawa Rowing Club has launched a 3 week #ORCmovestogether challenge on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The challenge aims to get members of the rowing community working out and motivated from the confines of their own homes all while staying connected to the sport and the people we love! Check out the Ottawa Rowing Club on Twitter (@OttawaRowing), Instagram (@OttawaRowingClub) and Facebook to get involved and enter to win some great prizes from David’s Tea, Biosteel, Starbucks, and Clifbar!

Please stay tuned to our website and the Club’s social media channels for more details and regular updates on the COVID-19 situation as we continue to adjust our plan for the safety and well-being of everyone in the ORC family.

Stay safe everyone.

COVID-19 and the ORC: Update 2

Members of the Ottawa Rowing Club Community,

The ORC recognizes the importance of monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and we intend to take all necessary precautions to protect those part of the Ottawa Rowing Club Community. The safety and well-being of our staff, volunteers, and athletes is out utmost priority. With the ongoing developments surrounding COVID-19 in the Ottawa area, the club is taking additional precautions to protect our staff and support our members and the surrounding community. The precautionary measures being implemented at this time will allow us to continue to provide support and service to all our members.

Please be assured that the club is closely following recommendations made by Ottawa Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and The World Health Organization with respect to helping prevent the spread of the virus. As recommendations change, or new directives are issued, we will update and adjust our procedures to suit the ever-changing environment.

At this time, the Ottawa Rowing Club has implemented the following procedures to assist in combatting the spread of COVID-19 while maintaining strong membership support:

  • Program coaches are no longer encouraging group workouts and will continue to provide direction for rowers looking to complete training on their own.
  • Staff members and ORC volunteers will conduct all meetings via teleconference and ZOOM online interface.
  • Visitors to the club will be restricted until further notice.
  • The club will be lending out it’s ergometers to members in good standing on a first-come, first-serve basis at no additional charge.

Despite current operational challenges, our goal through all of this is to develop processes and procedures to continue providing full service to our members and support to the entire Ottawa Rowing Club community, all while doing our part at this critical stage of limiting the spread of the virus and prioritizing the community’s health and safety. We will continue to share updates via and the club’s various social media channels as our strategic plan evolves.

Thank you for your support and patience during this process. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at

ORC and COVID-19

Dear ORC members,

In response to the COVID-19, the ORC training at the YMCA is cancelled until further notice given the YMCA facility closure.

ORC Program coaches will work with athletes to arrange alternate individual training at this time instead of ergometer sessions. The ORC Head Coach will direct coaches when group training sessions can continue. For the coming month(s), any athlete that is ill, who have been in contact with someone who is ill, or who have recently been travelling internationally should not attend any group training session. In addition, athletes, coaches, and all members are encouraged to follow the advice of medical professionals around hand washing and social distancing until further notice.

The ORC will be monitoring developments to determine if any precautions need to be taken for the start of our on-water season starting April 25, 2020.

The response to COVID-19 affects us all. We look forward to welcoming you to the ORC once circumstances improve. Please keep an eye on ORC’s social media for further news and updates surrounding the COVID-19 situation and training recommendations.
