Save the Date! Kitchissippi Flotilla is June 17, 2017

Save the Date! The ORC’s Kitchissippi Flotilla will be June 17, 2017.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the ORC, 150 rowers will take to the water in eights, quads, fours, doubles, pairs and singles, and travel downriver past the Prime Minister’s residence, then back up to the ORC’s historic boathouses. The flotilla will be documented through photographs and video.

Old-fashioned family activities, a pancake breakfast, live music, and the dedication of a new racing shell and commemorative sign will mark the occasion, and a display of archival photographs and objects will tell the story of the ORC since 1867. We will honour the deeper history of the river and its shores, and the people who have used the site before the ORC came along. This event is made possible by the generous support of Ontario 150.

Save the date in your calendar and watch this space for calls for volunteers and more news. Ideas? Questions? Email rowing@ottawarowingclub.com.

2016 Wes Kuran Scholarship Winner Announced

2016 Wes Kuran Scholarship Winner Announced

A highlight of the ORC’s AGM on February 28th was the presentation of the Wes Kuran Scholarship for 2016. The Wes Kuran Scholarship – for a deserving university athlete – was established to honour Wes Kuran in recognition of his service to the Ottawa Rowing Club as President (1997-2006) and for his long service to the club and rowing in Canada since the 1970s.

The award and cash prize of $500 is awarded to support the studies of a university club member who has demonstrated leadership in volunteerism and also rowing success.

The Wes Kuran Scholarship winner for 2016 is Lucy Ryan. Lucy’s rowing career began at the ORC in late summer 2015, following a novice season with Carleton University’s rowing team. In addition to rowing early mornings and late evenings since discovering the sport, Lucy has volunteered her time as a coach with the ORC’s Junior Development and learn to row program, and as a volunteer during the ORC’s Tulip Stake Race and at the National Capital High School Regatta. Congratulations, Lucy!
